Kane, Cornelius. The Unscratchables. Scribner. Jul. 2009. c.272p. ISBN 978-1-4165-9641-7. pap. $14. M
In the vein of The Big Sleep or Animal Farm, Kane (the pseudonym of Australian author Anthony O’Neill) combines hard-boiled mystery and social satire. Unlike other animal sleuths (e.g., Lilian Jackson Braun’s Ko-Ko and Yum-Yum), these creatures live in a human-free world. Max "Crusher" McNash, a bulldog detective with the San Bernardo Slaughter Unit, teams up with Cassius Lap, a Siamese from the Feline Bureau of Investigation to track down the perpetrator of a series of gruesome murders (several rottweiler gangsters are offed, and a feral feline serial killer is suspected). Could the crimes be connected to the ambitions of fox media magnate Phineas Reynard?

11 Health Myths That May Surprise You

June 30, 2009 |09:37 | Health  By : Team X

11 Health Myths That May Surprise YouMyths, half-truths and wives’ tales persist in medicine. Sometimes doctors and nurses even believe things that aren’t true or at least are unproven. That’s the focus of a new book, “Don’t Swallow Your Gum! Myths, Half-Truths and Outright Lies About Your Body and Health,”
by Dr. Aaron E. Carroll and Dr. Rachel C. Vreeman.Dr. Carroll and Dr. Vreeman, both from the Indiana University School of Medicine, have written a lot about medical myths and misunderstandings. In December 2007, the pair published an article in the British Medical Journal about seven medical myths even doctors believe. A year later, they identified six medical myths for the holiday season.

Now, “Don’t Swallow Your Gum” offers a fun collection of numerous medical myths that are likely familiar to most of us. The book is organized to focus on various types of myths, including myths about your body (you should poop at least once a day), myths about disease and illness (cold weather makes you sick), myths about sex and pregnancy (twins skip a generation) and myths about what we eat and drink (gum stays in your stomach for seven years.)

It’s a fun read, and chances are you will stumble across several medical myths you’ve always believed. Here are a few medical myths that may surprise you:

It discusses some of the common pitfalls for consumers and health professionals, how to identify meaningful health claims and research, and why it can be unwise to rely on the opinions of the experts.

Part 2: Your body, your choice is for you if you feel you have an understanding of the pitfalls in health advice, but need to know how to make better decisions by asking the right questions. It discusses the five key questions (see next page) to help make the best possible health decisions and what to look for when choosing a practitioner.

The business of breast cancer

June 9, 2009 |10:01 | Health  By : Team X

The-business-of-breast-canc

After reading "Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic," my heart went out to those hundreds of thousands of women who walk or run to raise funds for breast cancer and hold out hope that we are getting closer to preventing the disease altogether.

As the authors of this important collection of essays see it, these activists are just cogs in the misguided breast cancer industry wheel, raising funds that are ultimately directed -- misdirected, that is -- to the interests of big business rather than to those of women themselves. These women will probably be discouraged to read that although progress has been made in treating breast cancer, we are not anywhere near finding the cause.

The Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind by Gary Marcus

October 6, 2008 |17:02 | Health  By : Team X

Are we noble in reason? Perfect, in God's image? Far from it, says New York University psychologist Gary Marcus. In this lucid and revealing book, Marcus argues that the mind is not an elegantly designed organ but rather a "kluge," a clumsy, cobbled-together contraption. He unveils a fundamentally new way of looking at the human mind -- think duct tape, not supercomputer -- that sheds light on some of the most mysterious aspects of human nature.

Taking us on a tour of the fundamental areas of human experience -- memory, belief, decision-making, language, and happiness -- Marcus reveals the myriad ways our minds fall short. He examines why people often vote against their own interests, why money can't buy happiness, why leaders often stick to bad decisions, and why a sentence like "people people left left" ties us in knots even though it's only four words long.

Marcus also offers surprisingly effective ways to outwit our inner kluge, for the betterment of ourselves and society. Throughout, he shows how only evolution -- haphazard and undirected -- could have produced the minds we humans have, while making a brilliant case for the power and usefulness of imperfection.
